CLIL in Primary School: Make it Work, Make it Effective“
Teachers Ivona Hnatko and Danijela Horvat participated in the course "CLIL in Primary School: Make it Work, Make it Effective" as part of the Erasmus+ project. The course lasted from October 24 to 29, 2022, and was held at the Language Campus in the city of San Cristobal de La Laguna on Tenerife.
CLIL or Content and Language Integrated Learning is a dual-focused educational approach where some learning content is taught in an additional language. A CLIL lesson is therefore neither a language lesson nor a subject lesson transferred to a foreign language.
Some of the basic principles of the CLIL approach are that language is used for learning as well as for communication and it is the subject that determines the language needed for learning.
CLIL has been shown to have numerous linguistic, academic and socially beneficial outcomes.
Learning outcomes
• Produce successful and effective CLIL lessons;
• Adapt and simplify existing academic material for use in a foreign language;
• Plan stimulating activities that influence the learning of content and language;
• Relax students by creating an inclusive, fun and relaxed classroom environment;
• Involve students in communication activities appropriate to their level.
Languages play a key role in curricula across Europe.
With the increased use of the Internet, international projects and globalized jobs, the need for communication skills in a second or third language is also increasing.
Through the CLIL educational approach, learning is enhanced through increased motivation and the study of natural language in context. When students are interested in a topic, they are motivated to learn the language to communicate about it. Students are exposed to the second language for longer than the schedule would otherwise allow because the language is integrated into the curriculum.
The activities that will be carried out after returning from professional training are:
• Application of the CLIL method in working with children, within the integrated program of early English language learning
• Workshop on the application of the CLIL method in early English language learning for educators who implement the program and professional associates
• Create a kindergarten curriculum for early English language learning
